Hickstead Derby Meeting 22nd June - 24th June 2012

Friday: We will leave in the morning and make our way to a sports horse stud, which will be confirmed prior to departure. We will meet the resident stallions, and then the stud manager will take us to see the mares and foals. You will learn about the routine of the yard, and there will be an opportunity to see some of the youngstock at close quarters. At the end of a fascinating afternoon, we will proceed to our hotel and a relaxing dinner.

Saturday: We will make the short journey to Hickstead, which is recognised as one of the finest show venues in the world. Today, for showjumping enthusiasts there is the exciting Speed Derby, and a Grand Prix style competition. There are also showing classes featuring hacks, hackneys and coloured horses. For those interested in dressage, there will be an opportunity to see international riders competing in up to Grand Prix. There are over 150 trade stands, selling tack, clothing, gifts, or just tempting food and drink.   We will return to our hotel in time for dinner.

Sunday: We return to Hickstead for the famous Hickstead Derby. Only an outstanding horse and rider can emerge triumphant from the annual battle with the permanent obstacles like the 10 ft 6 ins Bank, the double water ditches, and most of all the Devil’s Dyke. Other attractions include ridden and working hunters, private driving and coster turnouts, and the Osborne refrigeration celebrity scurry. For the dressage enthusiasts, there is another full day of classes to inspire you. At the end of the afternoon, we will begin our homeward journey, making a meal stop en route.
